EAL
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Students learning English as their second or third language will be given support to succeed. We will try to pair students up with others speaking the same language, and will receive support from specialist staff, when needed, in lessons across the Academy.
We assess each student so that their prior knowledge is taken into account, as we expect most will make quick progress once they have been in the UK a while.
Staff at Heartlands speak many different languages between them, so are well placed to support new students. We have a number of multilingual dictionaries that students are welcome to use.
EAL students are welcome to come to Room T1 at break and lunchtimes to see staff about any issues. We run an after-school club every day in T1 until 4.00pm where students can come and do homework, get help, use the computers or just practise conversational English.
