ASDAN (COPE)
We are currently running the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (Cope) Level 2 award. This is equivalent to a grade B GCSE.
The aims of the qualification are to enable candidates to:
• Develop and demonstrate a range of personal, key and employability skills leading to personal effectiveness
• Broaden experience and manage learning through the enrichment activities provided by the ASDAN challenges
• Receive formal recognition and accreditation for the above.
By building a Portfolio of Evidence pupils complete various challenges, students must demonstrate competence at Level 2 in the following skills: Working with Others, Improving own Learning and Performance, Problem Solving, Planning and Carrying out a Piece of Research, Communication through Discussion and Planning and Giving an Oral Presentation.
ASDAN (PSHE )
The PSHE Short course was introduced to Heartlands in September 2010, tutors were given all the resources and lesson plans to be able to deliver the award within 3 tutor times per week. The main idea being to change the ethos of tutor times to a positive learning environment and for pupils to see an actual outcome of their learning. The main aim to accredit pupils with the award by the end of KS3.
The PSHE Short course has enabled pupils to remain focused and has given them a clear purpose, as they recognise the value of ASDAN accreditation. We are extremely pleased with the impact the ASDAN PSHE Short course has had on tutor time. Future aims are to use the work as a basis for those pupils who want to progress onto the ASDAN course we run at KS4.
Our next step is to use ASDAN PSHE Short course during creative curriculum weeks, which run 3 times a year to again accredit the pupils with the award by the end of KS3. This will allows us to make more use of external providers to supplement the materials that have already been written for the course.
Delivery of the 3 modules that we have done so far, Healthy and Safe Food, Conflict Resolution and Drugs and Alcohol have given pupils opportunities to experience PSHE in a more accessible, structured but measurable way.
